We recommend .30 caliber rifle with a variable powered scope for Plains game. Dangerous game requires a minimum of .375 but we prefer bigger if at all possible.
In order to use firearms with TDK Safaris, you must be 21 years of age. A maximum of four (4) firearms per person can be on your temporary import permit but you may not possess more than one firearm of the same caliber or gauge. South Africa allows only bolt and lever action firearms into the country. South Africa allows handguns into the country but only for hunting or sport-shooting purposes. To accomplish this you will need the following:
– A letter of invitation from the Outfitter stating the handgun is for hunting purposes only
South Africa prohibits bringing ammunition for firearms that are not on your permit.
Firearms must bear the manufacturer’s serial number or any other marks of identification. Make sure the identification number is on the barrel, the frame or the receiver of the firearm in the prescribed manner. Please be sure to check with the airline on their firearms and ammunition policies prior to your trip. Rejection of your temporary import permit application will result in confiscation of your firearms and your ammunition. Your belongings will only be returned once your depart to your country of residence.
Your permit must be on your person until you leave the country and ESPECIALLY when your firearms are in your possession. Remember the issuing of the Temporary Import Permits at the port of entry is FREE OF CHARGE. Do not tip or pay any SAPS Officer for this service.
You can rent a rifle for $80.00 per day which includes ammunition. Additionally, if traveling anywhere before or after your safari, special arrangements can be made at an additional cost.
